Treadmill desk
I received an email from Sizzlebop today, that was giving tips on how to keep a highly active child moving while doing Math. One of the ideas was putting the child on a slow treadmill and fitting a desk to it so they could walk slowly and work. Theoretically this technique would keep the child in the one place. This would engage the body and allow the mind to do its work. I want to give it a go.
We already have a treadmill…but I don’t want to convert that one into a desk. I thought I might find one on Craig’s list and sure enough I found a second hand one for $30 in the next town that I could pick up. There are recipes for DIY treadmill desks online. I’m going to sleep on this idea and if I still think it’s a good one I’m going to go and pick up that treadmill!
I wouldn’t need to raise the desk as my child is only 6 and not very tall. I have a table I could easily convert to fit over a treadmill. Here are some photos of a homemade treadmill desk for an older child.
I like the idea of combining the slow rhythmic movement with logic/Math.

I followed a rabbit trail here. Treadmill desk caught my eye.
I’m in CT too.
Another help for an active kid is to use an exercise ball as a seat instead of a chair. The ball allows for bouncing and requires the use of core muscles. They’re comfortable too.
