Mad science
I signed Chuckles up for a morning of Mad science workshops at the Y this week. I thought this might be something different. I have to say that it is something quite different. It is like science meets birthday party. She is quite enjoying it but I think for a family who is generally careful about what they eat and the exposure to particular kinds of culture I am on the edge of wanting to pull her out.
Today I asked her what she learned.
Chuckles: Well… I know that the solar system has 9 planets and not 8.
Me: Oh!!!! OK. And is there anything else you can remember?
Chuckles: Well… we were talking about space.
Me: Ok. Can you tell me one thing you remember?
Chuckles: Well I know about the moon, Titan.
Me: And which planet does it belong to?
Chuckles: Well I don’t remember…maybe Jupiter? (At least she didn’t say Pluto!)
At this point I am thinking…they are definately not remembering anything anyway so I don’t need to be concerned about the misinformation.
Then of course there is the snacktivity! This involves pretzels or graham crackers, Nerds (candy) and marshmallow fluff. Yuk.
So then I am rationalizing to keep her there. Well… there are 15 kids doing it. Only 3 girls though, if they all show up. There are children ranging from 7-10 there, but mainly on the younger end. There is an 8yo that Chuckles seems to like working with. Is this a good use of time?
Mw: Do you really want to go back?
Chuckles: Yes. Its OK. I like the activities.
It is true. They are doing a lot of interesting activities. They get to take home prepackaged, gimmicky, space themed materials which she likes to give to her brother.
It’s only for a week, in the mornings.
Needless to say, we won’t be signing up again.
