Lake Salad!

I haven’t posted the last couple of days.  I have been busy moving from our little log cabin to a new lake house just five minutes away! It is very intensive work, moving house.  But you all know that.

We have loved our cabin…but even so there are jobs around here that are not fun.  One of them is raking up pond weeds.  We are located on the side of the lake that receives cut up pond weeds that have been churned up by boats and accumulated on our beach!   This is not usually a problem until about late July-August, but this year for some reason it is out of control.

We even have weeds growing in our little bay.  I waded in with my net and dredged the bottom a little and pulled up what I’d call a yabbie.  What do you call them here? Little pond lobsters?  I quickly jumped out again!

It took a couple of hours to clean it out and I went to get my husband to help me move the big pile, and lo and behold a new pile had washed in.

And what am I going to do with this gigantic pile of lake salad?

On another note:

Happy Fourth of July!

Here in upstate CT, I am reaching for my sweater and looking at looming storm clouds.

I hope fall doesn’t come before the summer.

Oh…and we got our first letter from camp.  It sounds like Chuckles is having a blast in Pennsylvania and we are over our first time sleep away camp (in some unknown place with some unknown people) anxiety.

Speed didn’t make it through his Y camp this week…just Monday and Tuesday.  We’ve had so much fun with him on the other days.  He learnt how to cast his fishing rod all by himself.  He said to me this morning: “I’m very good at it now.  In fact,  I am excellent!” and he gave me a kiss on the cheek.  He also discovered do-nut peaches.  “How come I didn’t know about these babies before?”

He’ll be six in 1 week exactly.

One Response to “Lake Salad!”

    ChristineMM:

It is a crayfish some call it a crawfish. A tiny freshwater lobster.

Oh the environmentalists would be mad to know you are weeding the pond plants out, it is destroying habitat for the critters, they’d say.

Do you have a dock or a float so the kids can jump off it or avoid wading through pond weeds to go out deeper?

I have always wanted a little house on a lake. In Maine they call them “camps”. It is not a Connecticut term though. In Maine they say, “I’m going to camp this weekend” when they mean they are going to their log cabin house on a lake or a little house on a lake. It does not mean they are going tent camping or camping in a camper. LOL.

In Cape Cod they call those small vacation homes cottages. The only thing is the housing boom and good economy had some renovate or tear down and rebuilt 2500-4000 square foot houses (year round homes) with central air and everything and call them “their cottage”. That is not a cottage, that is a house plain and simple. LOL.

Hope your summer is going well. I’m unpacking from Cape Cod today. Everything is looking up on all fronts with us, the stuff you know about that I don’t blog about.

    Have a great day.
