I am such a sucker…
I booked Speed into camp for 4 weeks.
The first week went fine. His sister went with him and he loved it.
Then Chuckles left for sleep away camp and Speed went to camp Monday and by Tuesday he was complaining…and by Wednesday he was seriously negotiating.
Speed: Mum…you love teaching, right!
Mum: Yeah….
Speed: Teaching square root is your favorite, isn’t it!
Mum: Yeah…I like square root.
Speed: Well…I have an idea. If I stay home just today you can teach me square root! And I’ll practice all of my letters! And…I’ll do multiplication facts. I’ll even learn a continent. I’ll do everything you say. Anything! What do you say to that?
Mum: Anything I say, huh?
Speed: Anything for you, sweet mother. (kiss)
Mum: What about writing in your journal?
Speed: Not a problem, Mum. I’ll do it in a heartbeat.
Mum: You would have to run errands with me.
Speed: I love running errands. We can even go to Starbucks.
(Forget it. Now I’m done)
Mum: OK…but you have to go to camp tomorrow.
Speed: OK Mum. I’ll be the best boy ever.
(Speed didn’t go to camp for two more days….then we had the weekend…and this morning he gave me the “don’t leave me here” look and was so cute with his backpack on and his lunch box….that we walked into the admin office and cancelled the camp for the whole of this week.)
I am such a sucker.
But we had another great summer day together. I will never regret spending more time with him.

Not a sucker…a great mother who puts her kids first…not one who parks them to have a little free time…..

I wonder why he doesn’t like it?
I have volunteered at Day Camp for Cub Scouts. It is largely used by working mothers as paid daycare. Secondarily stay at home moms use it for a break and to keep the kids busy and get stuff done at home. This I know from THEM telling me! I’m not making this up.
He may be bored. The camp may stink. Maybe a problem is there. Maybe the teachers stink or are not running a tight ship. Maybe the kids are cruel. There are reasons I am sure.
I have no reason to believe that there is anything superior for a 5 year old to do or learn at summer day camp except maybe swimming lessons, than a mother can do at home or fun that can be had at home with family.
Enjoy your son!!
