Homeschooling Vision
A friend of mine was mentioning how important she thought having an educational vision is for your children, especially when you are homeschooling.
I couldn’t agree more! It’s easy to waiver and look at greener pastures over the fence and worry, if you don’t have your feet solidly planted in the ground of what you are doing.
So…this week I have set about writing visions for both of my children.
I have not found writing a long term vision easy. It has been a bit like painting a picture. All sorts of ideas pop into my head and I have drawn my children and written down all of these bits as they have come up in bubbles around them. Included are things like how I see the future and what skills they will need to negotiate their lives effectively, so that they are equipped to deal with any situation they get themselves into…so that they are resilient, flexible, logical, tech savvy, intuitive, persistent, creative, socially effective, extremely kind, Earth loving, balanced, healthy, happy…of course, independent and passionate…
At this point I think. Isn’t this what every parent wants for their children?
(And then the children turn into teenagers… and that’s another story)
I am thinking about all the roads one can take to nurture these capacities. And now I move into middle term vision. What kinds of things develop a logical mind, for example? I think problem solving, math, geometric proofs, logistics, discussing current events, chess…I could go on. After fleshing these ideas out I move on to short term goals and what I’d like to expose them to this year.
At this point you realize that the year is too short!
The possibilities are endless. Some are more fun than others. Which roads shall we take? How can we do this as a family so we are all functioning as our best selves?
Then and drum roll please…. I realize that my children already have those attributes.
…and the important work begins…how do we help our children keep these attributes.
