Hawaii in all seasons!

Today we visited Dahana Ranch to partake in a cattle ranching activity.  Two hours on horseback, herding a mob of cattle from point A to point B.  I love farming.  I love cows.  Let’s just say being two hours on horseback is not my favorite past time.

We left home at noon.  It was seering hot at the beach.  We drove up to the ranch about 40 minutes away and up about 2, 500 feet. We passed through a couple of different climates on the way and it became progressively cooler.  By the time we arrived we could barely see our hands in front of our faces (let alone a cow!)  Fog had settled over the ranch.  Droplets were forming in front of our eyes and before long we were on our horses and traipsing in the rain, looking for cattle in the fog.

We finally found the cows and hollered and herded a small mob of about 50 cows  (to another corner of the same large paddock! Chuckles handled her horse beautifully, trotting and cantering after stray cows, loving every minute of it.   Speed hung in there and didn’t start complaining until the last 30 minutes…being led around by the guide and sitting like a little drowned rat on his horse.  The longest pony ride of his life!

We were altogether and it was a nice family adventure. We were so happy to be cozy and warm back in the car (except for Chuckles who would still be there now if we had let her)…and 30 minutes later we were back in the summer heat!
