Aloha!
WOW!
This is an amazing place. We are staying in some one’s condo that we found online.
Mauna Lani is a beautiful resort area situated on an old lava river that meets the ocean. Think green manicured lawns and gardens, bird song, turquoise water and palm trees swaying in the gentle breeze. It is a mini town with hotels, condos, shops and a beautiful rugged coastline interlaced with fish ponds and white beaches nestled in between lava outcrops.
I just went snorkeling, hand in hand with Chuckles. We saw turtles and some pretty fish. Speed is just beginning to snorkel. He is slowly getting the hang of it. The weather is perfect. Everything is so green and lush. I feel so relaxed. Tonight we go to a luau.
I went for a little walk with Speed this morning. We discussed igneous rocks, collected some and worked out that some float! We collected dead coral on the beach and then took a sand sample and discussed all the elements to the sand. We found all sorts of minuscule shells in our sand, lava and coral and things we couldn’t recognize. We talked about the color of beach sand and now want to visit a black beach.
The fish ponds were another source of fascination. There are wooden gates at the entrances of the ponds so small fish can come in and they become too large to swim out again. The ponds were bursting with fish, mainly mullet I think. There were also A’ama crabs that camouflaged themselves beautifully on the lava and we also saw a Black-crested Night Heron eyeing off the mullet!
I think we have found paradise! We all want to move here!
