World Digital Library
There was a post put out by CT Homeschoolers about the World Digital Library that UNESCO is heading up with the aid of 30 international educational institutions including the US Library of Congress. Yale University is amongst them and has uploaded many archives onto the site. Visitors to the site can browse, download and search for materials that were otherwise difficult to access. I would never think to go and visit the library at Yale for materials. I thought I would check it out.
I put in a search for a number of random historical items and it took a while until I got a hit. I found an old map of the Galapagos Islands. Then I thought I’d search for Captain James Cook as we are looking at explorers at the moment. Bingo! There was an 983 page book detailing his four voyages. It’s an old book published in 1773 and every page has been downloaded. You can clearly read it using the zoom feature and the photos are very clear. You can even save the whole book and presumably print them. I was very impressed, not that I plan to read the book but I’d definitely go back.
Isn’t it a wonderful concept! Imagine having the archives of the world at your fingertips! It’s worth checking out!
