Square Root
Do you remember fourth grade Math?
Did you learn how to calculate the square root of numbers into the millions? When today Chuckles graduated from the binomial to the trinomial pattern in calculating square root. That means she can calculate the square root of any number up to a million using beads and soon on paper.
…so I suggest to her that she can make up a number for me for demonstration purposes to find the square root of! She chose 987,456! No worries.
(At this point you are probably wondering why we would teach square root into the millions. We do it to develop logical reasoning, and the child uses all of the operations within the problem, as well as geometry and they are using a material abstraction of algebra.)
She got out the peg board and our pegs and we used our trinomial guide to help us. 1.5 hours later, 400 pegs, all laid out and the correct remainder remaining in the cups, we finished. We oohed and aahed at how beautiful the pegs looked at different angles!
She looked at me and said. ” I think I’ll only be doing 1 math problem a day for a while!” I don’t blame her. It is a lot easier on paper, than physically with the pegs.

For someone who needs a calculator for everything and has no logical framework for the rules of mathematics (only the practical applications of some formulas learned through painful repetitions) I marvel at watching our little girl compute large square roots by hand…When you step back and look at what you have acomplished with them this year, contemplate for a minute the rich mosaic of knowledge you have guided them to through a variety of hands-on experiences…and then (only for a minute or so though) you can be smug! Way to go darling! way to go!!
