Mayflower II and Mystic Aquarium
Our little field trip continued this morning in Plymouth with a visit to the Mayflower II. We went on board. It was a warm, pristine morning and we were greeted by an actor playing the ship’s captain in 1627. He spoke in Old English about life on his ship and inquired about where we were from. It was fascinating to listen to him (for me) and he explained ”the goings on” continually for about 20 minutes with Speed threatening to jump overboard at any second.
Down below another actor started up a conversation and once again I was spellbound by his historical accounts and juicy bits of information about the people on board and the different folks in Plymouth. By this time Speed had abandoned ship. Chuckles was drawn in too. We were interested in the navigation tools and this peg device that monitors your compass readings. Surrounding us were tiny beds that slept six a piece! I never knew that English people of the time slept sitting up!
After a game of Blind Man’s Bluff we headed back toward CT, stopping at the Mystic Aquarium. They have exceptional exhibits. The water is so clear and the fish look healthy and robust. There were some fascinating things.
Chuckles spent a lot of time with the Beluga whales. We thought the most fascinating thing was a toss up between the upside down jellyfish and the mermaid’s purses that contained multiple tiny baby skates. The most amazing thing was the anemone garden. Speed touched a huge one and it retracted suddenly to his amazement.
Did you know there are penguins native to tropical climates?
No…neither did I!
